Betting tips for Northern Ireland’s opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Hungary in Group F.
Northern Ireland are firm underdogs when they open their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign away to Hungary on Sunday.
Michael O’Neill’s inexperienced side have not won in their last 9 internationals, and have dropped 6 places to 95th in FIFA’s latest world rankings. It’s hardly surprising that most bookmakers have them priced as 7/1 outsiders against a tough Hungarian side.
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is the most notable absentee through suspension, but senior players Chris Brunt, Kyle Lafferty, Gareth McAuley and Jamie Ward return after missing the friendlies against Chile and Uruguay last June. There are call ups for MK Dons’ Will Grigg and Ben Reeves, who both impressed O’Neill in the Dons 4-0 Capital One Cup giant killing of Manchester United, although Reeves will have to wait for his chance after picking up a hamstring injury in training. Liverpool’s Ryan McLaughlin and Brentford’s Stuart Dallas have both withdrawn from the 26 man squad, which features 11 lower league players.
In contrast to Northern Ireland’s FIFA ranking, Hungary are 61 places higher in 34th and are looking to qualify for their first European Championships since 1972. They have been edging closer in recent years, finishing 3rd in the Euro 2012 qualifying group and also in the recent World Cup qualifiers. They will fancy their chances this time round however, in a group which also comprises of Greece, Romania, Finland and the Faroe Islands.
There is little value in them to win at odds of around 1/2, so an alternative could be Hungary to be winning at half time/full time, best priced at 13/10 with Paddy Power.
Northern Ireland have not scored in their last 4 games, and have only found the net once in their last 6. Hungary to win to nil is 21/20 with the majority of bookmakers.
Hungary are expected to start with Nemanja Nikolic up front. Whilst the 26 year old is relatively unknown, he has scored 7 goals in the opening 6 games of the season for Hungarian side Videoton and is 10/1 to be the first goalscorer with BetFred.
Former Watford and Ipswich striker Tamas Priskin scored 2 goals in 2 games in Hungary’s friendlies against Albania and Kazakhstan in June and is 11/2 with BoyleSports to open the scoring.
Another familiar name is captain Zoltan Gera. The former West Brom and Fulham midfielder scored on his debut for his new side Ferencvaros last week. He’s priced at 9/4 with Bet Victor to score anytime and add to his 23 international goals.
