Ever since making his short-lived introduction among the Premier League just a few short seasons ago, 22-year-old Ravel Morrison has certainly gone down as something of an enigma within the English game.
Whether it be for landing himself a whole manner of different unwanted headlines regarding largely off-field incidents, reportedly falling out with several high profile colleagues throughout the years – or simply providing English football with that supposed ‘bad-boy’ character everybody seemingly loves to hate – the former England U21 midfielder has most definitely carved out a distinct reputation for himself so far in his brief career.
One thing remains absolutely certain when regarding the former Manchester United and West Ham man however, for Ravel Morrison still arguably represents the most gifted young footballing talent this country has seen in many a year.
So then, seeing as the mercurial midfielder hasn’t exactly set the world alight since joining Lazio in the Italian Serie A this summer, will we see the up and coming ball-player back among the English game sooner rather than later, or has Ravel Morrison simply used up all his relevant chances to make it on these here shores?
Well, even though the player in question has admittedly failed to deliver the goods among the Italian league thus far, there have nonetheless been a few important factors influencing his lack of first team action at the Stadio Olympico this season.
For one thing, the 22-year-old Englishman has suffered a string of frustrating injuries at Lazio this term, forcibly ruling himself out of Stefano Pioli’s starting XI for the majority of the 2015/16 campaign. No player can impress when they don’t have the required fitness levels stacked firmly under their belt after all – so perhaps now would arrive as a slightly premature moment to write Ravel Morrison off at Lazio completely.
The former Manchester United and West Ham midfielder finally returned to the first team set-up with his new side last week however, after impressing somewhat in Lazio's 2-0 away victory against Rosenborg BK last time out in the Europa League. Hopefully for the player’s sake alone, this can be the beginning of a promising new venture for Morrison. He certainly excited the Italians for large portions of the pre-season campaign with Lazio – and maybe if he continues in such a successful vein in Serie A this year – the England national team could well have a genuinely promising prospect on their hands for a change.
However, with someone like Ravel Morrison – the word ‘however’ seemingly crops up all the time when things seem to be going relatively well. Since producing a series of cryptic messages on social media, reportedly failing to learn the Italian language and settle in to his new surroundings, as well as most likely proving a somewhat unique character to deal with in training and behind closed doors, Morrison’s future has once again been called into doubt.
If he eventually fails to make it with Lazio, that really could be it for the undoubtedly talented midfielder. It would be a shame for the player on an individual level of course, but also a huge loss for the England national side.
Yet, as very few of us can claim to know what Ravel Morrison is actually like as a person, perhaps the constant speculation over his future remains rather pointless in the cold light of day. He’s either going to make it at the top, or fail considerably and drift off into oblivion. Either way, although a strong dose of professional man-management could potentially ‘save’ the midfielder before it truly becomes too late, it’s really all down to his own personal determination levels and desire in the end. Whatever Ravel Morrison wants to achieve in the modern era, he can easily do so with the undisputed talent in his locker.
On the basis of such reasoning alone, perhaps it would in fact be best for the 22-year-old to stick it out in Italy a good while longer. The Italians aren’t going to prove generous in the opportunities handed to him in Serie A – but maybe that’s a good thing with all things considered.
Therefore, although the ex-Birmingham, QPR and Cardiff City loanee could well return to England at some distant stage down the line, the English game – or perhaps more specifically, the Premier League – has most probably seen the back of Ravel Morrison at least for the foreseeable future. Only time will tell if he turns out to be the player everyone in England was hoping to witness when he first burst onto the scene…
If you think Ravel Morrison’s former teammates at QPR can return to the top-flight this season, Queens Park Rangers are currently 25/1 to achieve promotion in 2015/16 with William Hill
