Sunday’s Accumulator Tips:
Arsenal to beat West Ham
Fresh from their Community Shield success last weekend; Arsenal will be looking to get their Premier League campaign off to a flyer with many people tipping them to challenge for the title this season. Sunday’s victory over Chelsea will certainly give them the confidence that this could be their year, and an opening day clash with West Ham looks an ideal opportunity to make a good start.
The Hammers rested the majority of their senior squad for their Europa League trip to Romania in midweek but a recent injury to striker Enner Valencia has already dealt a blow to their chances at the Emirates. Plenty is expected of West Ham following the arrival of Slaven Bilic, but an away fixture with Arsenal is as tough as they come in this league, and you’d expect the home side should have enough quality to win this one.
Stoke v Liverpool Draw
Stoke kick off their campaign with an intriguing clash against Liverpool; the side who they thrashed 6-1 on the final day of last season. Surely a result that will provide the Potters with plenty of confidence, it would be no surprise to see them grab the three points once more having made some good summer signings. However the news that their captain Ryan Shawcross will miss the first two months of the season will certainly come as a blow to Mark Hughes’ side, something that will dent their chances of a repeat performance.
A trip to the Britannia is definitely a tough task for any side, but Liverpool will arrive in far better shape having made some positive additions to their squad as well as ending the issue surrounding Raheem Sterling that may well have affected their performance back in May.
With this in mind the draw looks to be the most tempting option for the next selection of my accumulator tip, in a game that could see both sides showing signs of rustiness and a slow start very possible. Don’t expect the flurry of goals we saw last time, and it’s likely these sides could cancel each other out with both managers looking to avoid an opening day defeat.
Middlesbrough to beat Preston
Middlesbrough suffered the cruel heartache of a playoff final defeat back in May and will be eager to put this disappointment behind them by going one better this year.
Some great additions to the squad this summer; including a return to the Riverside for Stewart Downing have seen Boro installed as one of the early favourites for automatic promotion and they will be hoping to show off these credentials with a win when they travel to newly promoted Preston North End.
The home side faired rather better in their season-ending showcase by trouncing Swindon to secure a return from League One. Despite their good form in the second part of the campaign, a match up with Middlesbrough represents a huge step up in class and one which will give us plenty of clues as to how they could fare this season.
Preston will certainly be keen to pick up where they left off in May, but it could be worth siding with the visitors who may well edge a victory in a tricky looking encounter.
Celtic to beat Partick
Celtic got off to a comfortable start as they look to successfully defend their SPL title once again, and travel to Partick fresh from success in the Champions League. The Scottish champions made it through to the final qualifying round of Europe’s premier competition with a goalless draw in Baku, and will be hopeful of continuing this momentum in what should prove a much more routine fixture.
Partick drew their opener with Hamilton last weekend thanks to another goalless draw having played much of the game with 10 men, but face a much sterner test this weekend as they look to net their first league goal of the campaign.
Unsurprisingly Celtic go into this one as heavy favourites and they should make their superior class count on Sunday with a comfortable victory.
