Brentford to Beat Charlton Evens:

These two sides had contrasting seasons last year as Brentford soared to League One promotion while Charlton barely survived relegation. The Bees were magnificent throughout their League One campaign last year despite losing manager Uwe Rosler to Wigan. Their home form was particularly good, winning 19 of their 26 games last season. Charlton eventually stayed up by 7 points last season but it looked unlikely for long periods. Away form was a massive issue as they won just 6 times on the road all season. Brentford will be riding a wave of optimism while with another new manager in charge, Charlton could struggle again and if they don’t gel it could be an opening day defeat.

Derby to Beat Rotherham 4/7:

Heartbreak was the name of the game for both of these sides at the end of last season, except Derby were the ones suffering it while Rotherham were the ones inflicting it. Derby had a great second half to the season under Steve McClaren and lost the Play-Off final in the final minutes to QPR despite playing against ten men while Rotherham came from 2-0 down to beat Leyton Orient on penalties in their Play-Off Final. How well Derby react to that defeat will be key but McClaren certainly has the experience to get them bouncing back. They have kept the squad together well with the likes of Will Hughes and Craig Bryson remaining. Home form was very good last season and they won their final 6 when playing in front of their own fans. Back to back promotions is an impressive feat for Rotherham but this could be a step too far for them and Derby should have too much quality and Championship know how for them.

Barnsley to Beat Crawley 21/20:

On to League One now and a Barnsley side whose 7 year stay in the Championship came to an end last season. They Yorkshire side punched above their weight for a long time in the Championship and will now be hoping to get back there. They have an experienced manager at this level and some good new players in now. Crawley have had a complete revamp this summer, 18 new players have joined and them gelling will be key to any success. Crawley are one of the favourites for relegation and it looks rightly so. Barnsley should have far too much for a Crawley team playing together competitively for the first time and should pick up a good 3 points.

Preston to Beat Notts County 6/10:

Preston are another side to suffer Play-Off anguish last season as they crashed out in the League One Semis. However, Since Simon Grayson joined 18 months ago, Preston have performed well and looked very good at home. County stayed up by the skin of their teeth last season and the Magpies only stayed up on the last day. Shaun Derry is still relatively inexperienced as a manager and away form was a huge issue last season with Notts County losing 7 of their last 9 away from home. Preston won 5 on the spin to end last season before the Play-Offs and with the likes of last season’s top scorer Garner still about, County may struggle for more away wins.

Bury to Beat Cheltenham Evens:

Finally, to League 2 and the favourites Bury. Since David Flitcroft came in last season, the Shakers have been on the up and positivity is in the air. They now have a more settled squad and only quality individuals such as Ryan Lowe and Nicky Adams have been brought in. Cheltenham are one of the favourites for relegation and won just one of their final 6 last season. Bury were unbeaten in their final 15 home games in League Two last season but did draw far too many. Bury have a good manager, good players and should get a good result against Cheltenham.
