Football predictions and FC Midtylland v Southampton betting tips for the Europa League qualifying second leg this week from our football tipster.
After their unremarkable performance at St Mary’s last week, Southampton head to Denmark on this week to take on FC Midtjylland. Tune in to BT Sport for the 19:45 KO and here are our match predictions and betting tips.
FC Midtylland v Southampton Predictions:
Southampton could – and should – have been heading into this clash with at least a goal’s cushion over their Danish opposition. The Saints were poor on the night of their 1-1 first leg draw, but credit has to go to their opponents for a well-executed game plan. After taking the lead in the first half, Midtjylland defended well despite being starved of possession and managed the final twenty minutes of the match brilliantly. With the exception of Maya Yoshida’s last-gasp header striking a post, Southampton barely had a sniff at goal.
Leading up to the second leg clash and both teams picked up a draw apiece in their domestic leagues at the weekend. Midtjylland will be disappointed with only a point against second bottom Esbjerg, whilst Southampton played out a dire 0-0 stalemate against newly promoted Watford. If this weekend is anything to go by, Thursday’s encounter could prove to be a real stinker for the neutral.
Prices for the match have Southampton as favourites at a best price of 23/20. Midtjylland can be backed at longer odds of 29/10, with the draw on offer at 12/5.
Following the 1-1 result in the first leg, Southampton need to win or at least a higher scoring draw. Judging by the fact Midtjylland have only conceded two goals in six matches domestically, I can’t really see this being a high scoring affair. On paper, Southampton have far more quality and they now know what their opponents are all about, so I think they will just about nick a very tight game.
With this in mind back The Saints to qualify at 4/6 with Betfred and also the 2-0 correct score with the same bookmaker at 8/1. If Ronald Koeman’s men can take the lead, they should be able to pinch a second on the break as their opponents chase an equaliser.
Moving over to the cards market, and since his move from Chelsea, Oriol Romeu has managed to get himself booked in every match for his new club. Granted the Spaniard plays the defensive midfield role, but he really does barge around like a bull in a china shop for most of the match. Although it’s probably worth backing him to pick up a card in the 90 minutes as well, have a punt on Romeu to be booked first in the game at 8/1 with Bet Victor.
