Euro 2016 predictions for how Group F will turn out following the group matches where Portugal are favourites ahead of Austria, Iceland and Hungary.
Group F has a clear top team and then the rest of the group will be very interesting, we could see a best third placed team qualifying from Group F because the results are likely to be very mixed.
Euro 2016 Predictions Group F
Portugal
Clearly Portugal look to have the most quality and will be expecting to top the group with relative ease, but in recent tournaments Portugal have struggled for cohesion and at times look like a team of individuals. That may change however and it’s obvious that they have some truly gifted players. Cristiano Ronaldo will of course be their main man as he has been for over a decade now, and you feel this may be his last European Championships so he will want to go out with a bang. They breezed through qualification but worryingly only scored 11 goals in eight matches against weak opposition. They have some fascinating youngsters who I expect to play well in this tournament, Joao Mario has had an incredible season for Sporting Lisbon, and Renato Sanches, who had only made his debut for Benfica just six months ago has already been snapped up by Bayern Munich with an eye watering fee some are saying could rise to 70 million Euros.

Austria
Austria have named their 24-man squad for this summer’s European Championships already. They do have to drop one name before the final deadline. This is the first European Championships they’ve qualified for, as their only previous appearance in the competition was because they were co-hosts. There are no real surprises apart from Valentino Lazaro getting his first call up since 2014. The Red Bull Salzburg winger adds another dimension to the squad as he is a direct runner who likes to get crosses into the box, something which frontman Mark Janko will be excited about. Marko Arnautovic and David Alaba are the standout names in the team, with the Bayern Munich man having the hopes of a nation placed firmly on his shoulders – can he lead Austria out of Group F at Euro 2016?
Iceland
Iceland have been a revelation in the past few years. Since Lars Lagerback took the helm at Iceland in 2011 he has taken them from qualification group’s lower ranked teams to a World Cup playoff in 2014 and now a major tournament at Euro 2016. In a wonderful twist, Eidur Gudjohnsen has been named in the Iceland squad. The 37 year old had famously retired from International football in tears following the play off defeat for the World Cup, but the highest goalscorer in Iceland’s history couldn’t resists donning the boots and giving it another go for the Euro 2016 qualification and tournament. The Molde man will not be there to make up the numbers, he will want to be a big part on and off the pitch as he brings vast experience to the squad.
Hungary
Hungary are probably the weakest team in Group F. They finished 3rd behind Northern Ireland and Romania in qualification but managed to edge Norway 3-1 on aggregate in the play off for the tournament. The ex-West Bromwich Albion man Zoltan Gera will be proud to lead his side into the tournament at the tender age of 37. Keep an eye out for striker Nemanja Nikolic, the Legia Warsaw man has bagged 27 goals in 36 league games to win the Polish Ekstraklasa for his club. The playmaker Balasz Dzsudzsak will be another player who Hungary will be relying on to provide the forwards with enough ammunition to challenge.

My first betting tip for Group F at Euro 2016 is for Portugal to finish top of the group. They have another gear which the other sides in the group cannot reach, and when you have Cristiano Ronaldo in your line up, it’s hard to assume anything other than three wins for Portugal as his Real Madrid form since Christmas has been breath-taking. Coral are offering Evens for Portugal to top the group and that’s my first Group F prediction.

My second Euro 2016 prediction for Group F is a little risky but one I believe is excellent value. It is for Iceland to finish second in the group. They’re a team who I don’t believe have been given enough credit, they conceded just six goals in a qualifying group which included Czech Republic, Turkey and Netherlands, and they have quality as well. They’ll need Gylfi Sigurdsson to have an excellent tournament, but he is more than capable of turning it on for the big stage. Iceland are 3/1 with Sky Bet to finish second in the group.
