While there is a great deal to distinguish French midfielder Paul Pogba as a player, he is undoubtedly the best free transfer currently operating at the higher-echelons of the game.
Although he has yet to truly excel at the Euros, he has shown flashes of brilliance and remains an enigmatic and powerful force capable of incredible things.
He shone in a box-to-box role against the Swiss, for example, driving his team forward from deep and hitting the bar with a stunning, 30-yard strike. Pogba also inspired the second-half comeback from the French in the second round against Ireland, forming a formidable and controlling partnership with the excellent Blaise Matuidi.
A Brief History: Pogba under the Microscope
Pogba's career began at US Torcy Jgd., before he joined the famous AC Le Havre academy as a teenager. He was then controversially signed by Manchester United as a 16-year old, with the Red Devils capturing his services for an undisclosed (but nominally free) transfer.
The powerful French midfielder then spent three years moving through the gears at Old Trafford, representing United's U-18 and U-21 sides in the process. It was here that things began to go awry, as Pogba clearly became aware of his unique talent while his frustration grew at a lack of first-team opportunities. After a public fall-out with Sir Alex Ferguson and protracted contract discussions, Pogba stunned officials by handing in a transfer request almost as soon as he was eligible to move for free.
Acrimony aside, Pogba quickly signed a pre-contract with Juventus in the summer of 2012, and since then he has blossomed into a mature and supremely talented midfielder. Last season was his best representing the Old Lady, as he contributed 10 goals and 16 assists among some stunning displays to help fire Juventus to the Serie A title. He has, in part, continued this form in Euro 2016, with his energy, drive and diversity making him a formidable force who is destined to become the world's best player.
Will Pogba break the Transfer Record?
The only thing that could potentially hold Pogba back as a player is his lack of a defined position, as his range of abilities mean that he can perform effectively as a holding player, a box-to-box midfielder and even a number 10.
This may be resolved in his next transfer. Clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid are prepared to pay big bucks for the Frenchman, and they’ll likely place him in the heart of their midfields. He has Euro 2016 to deal with first though and alongside star player Dimitri Payet he’ll play an integral role in France’s push for Euro 2016 success.
