Switzerland Embolo player focus

Euro 2016 Player in Focus: Basel’s Breel-y Good Forward

At just 19 years of age, Euro 2016 could be the tournament which transforms Breel Embolo into a household name. The youngster burst onto the scene in Switzerland two years ago, and in France he could well announce himself on the world stage.

He’s already captured the attention of Manchester United earlier in the year, and Wolfsburg had a €27million bid rejected by Basel, the club where he’s risen through the ranks.

Born in Cameroon, Embolo moved to Switzerland at a young age, settling in Basel, and started his career at local club Nordstern. Quickly developing a reputation, he stepped up to the youth set-up at Old Boys before joining Basel in 2010.

Since breaking into the first team he’s earned a lot of praise and this season has netted 10 league goals this season supporting Austria’s Marc Janko.

Described as a complete striker by many, including UEFA.com, who claimed, “he is powerful, technically strong and decisive. He has explosive pace and is a composed finisher.”

All the attributes the Swiss will need if they are to get beyond a group that includes Euro 2016 favourites France. They’ll be expecting to get through that group which also includes Romania and Albania, but beyond that would be a bonus for La Nati.

The nation failed to even reach the tournament four years ago and were somewhat lacking when it came to goals.

Plenty of attention will fall on Embolo to remedy that alongside Josip Drmic. His power and pace will likely cause plenty of problems against the Romanians, who only conceded twice in qualifying. It’s the Albanians who are first up for Switzerland however, in one of the most interesting matches in the tournament.

Lots of attention will be on the heritage of both teams, with both Switzerland and Austria having stars who could have represented each other, however, it could well be a Cameroonian who steals the headlines.

A big summer for Embolo will likely see plenty of offers away from the Swiss champions and they could find it difficult to turn down some of the bigger boys.

For the supporter, he’ll be certainly one to watch. He’ll bring a lot of excitement to the Swiss team, and alongside Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabian Frei they could have a formidable attack that could cause even the strongest of defenders problems.
