Euro 2016 Group F Betting Tips – Austria to win the Group

Euro 2016 Group F contains Portugal, Austria, Iceland and Hungary and despite being favourites to win the group, Portugal might not be the best bet.

 

Portugal rely so much on Cristiano Ronaldo that sometimes the pressure is too much, even for him. After losing their first match in Euro 2016 qualifying Portugal won the following seven, but will they win Group F at Euro 2016?

This looks one of the most open groups on paper with Austria and Iceland both going into the European Championships on the back of their best qualifying campaign ever. Iceland finished second in their qualifying group behind Czech Republic and left Netherlands down in fourth place. They stuttered towards the end of qualifying when the pressure built up and I think this could be the same story in France this summer. The best bet for the Euro 2016 group F winner lies elsewhere.

 

Portugal were great in qualifying but their lack of support for Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to be their undoing again. No recognised top class striker means Ronaldo is burdened with all of the goalscoring requirements. Admittedly he thrives on that but Portugal are susceptible to an upset and their Euro 2016 qualifying group of Denmark, Albania, Serbia and Armenia was never going to trouble them.

 

Hungary are expected to struggle in the group and they are one of the big outsiders in the Euro 2016 betting odds. They shouldn't trouble Austria or Portugal so the group is likely to be decided by the matches between the other three nations. If Hungary do get points from Austria or Portugal it will blow the group wide open.

 

For that reason, my Euro 2016 betting tip for the Group F winner is going to be Austria. They breezed through qualifying, winning nine of their 10 matches and scored goals on the way, conceding just five. They beat Russia to top spot in qualifying and also saw off Sweden and Montenegro. It was a really impressive qualifying display from the Austrians and their away wins mean they are a good bet for winning Group F. With Portugal’s over-reliance on Ronaldo and Austria’s great team spirit and tight defence I think they can pip Portugal to top spot. The two sides meet in Paris on Saturday 18th June and that could be the deciding fixture in the group.
