Crystal Palace Team Review, Key Players, Predictions and Game to Look Out For

The appointment of Alan Pardew in January 2015 inspired a marvellous run of form as the 55-year-old became the first manager to take over a Premier League club in the relegation zone and guide them to a top half finish.

On the other hand, it is debatable as to whether the Eagles have progressed since the monumental start that they enjoyed under the former Newcastle boss.

Last season saw the club reach the FA Cup final where they were unfortunate to lose out in extra time to Manchester United, although their league form was below par – culminating in a 14 match winless run which saw Palace finish in a disappointing 15th place.

Two games into the current campaign and Palace have yet to muster a goal or a point despite £23 million being shelled out on the recruitment of Andros Townsend and James Tomkins. All this could now change with the acquisition of club-record signing of powerful frontman Christian Benteke from Liverpool.

Crystal Palace vs. Bournemouth Betting Tips/Preview

Crystal Palace odds with Bet365 are 11/8 as both clubs go in search of their first victories of the season. Benteke scored on his home debut for his two previous clubs and I predict he will find the back of the net against the Cherries to help Palace emerge with all three points.

Injuries

Striker Frazier Campbell is out with a hamstring injury and attacking midfielder Bakary Sako is fighting to be fit in time for Saturday’s encounter after suffering a groin strain in pre-season.

Crystal Palace’s Star Players

Palace

Fans favourite Yannick Bolasie and former captain Mile Jedinak have moved onto pastures new, with expectations now inevitably going to be centred on the £27 million rated Benteke.

The pace and trickery of Townsend and Wilfried Zaha could prove to be an exciting attacking option with both wingers capable of playing on either flank. Set-piece specialist and French international Yeoman Cabaye remains the most technically gifted player at the club, although he is yet to find his best form in the red and blue colours of the South London club.

Predicted Finish

Making the top ten is going to be extremely difficult given the quality spread across the teams competing to finish in the upper echelons of the Premier League. Palace were threatening the European places last year until their catastrophic downfall which almost got them dragged into a relegation battle. Despite their sizeable outlay this summer, I still feel the squad is lacking depth and will end up finishing in either 12th or 13th place.

Top Goal Scorer

Connor Wickham managed six goals in 24 appearances last season and has failed to prove himself as a top-line forward. Only two clubs scored fewer goals than Palace last season in the Premier League, so it will be up to Benteke to rediscover the goalscoring form he showed whilst an employee at Villa Park for three seasons – averaging almost a goal every other game.

History Of Crystal Palace

Palace were founded in 1905 and hold the record for the most play-off wins for promotion to the top flight, winning the final four times. Have made the FA Cup final twice, succumbing to the Red Devils on both occasions. Finished third in the 1990/91 campaign – their highest position in the top tier of English football.

Managers

Crystal Palace

Steve Coppell – current head coach of the Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League, guided the club to their first ever FA Cup final in 1990 and took them from the English second tier to their greatest-ever successs in the top flight. The likes of Iain Dowie and Ian Holloway have also led Palace to the Premier League in recent times.

Key Games to Look Out For

Three of their next four encounters are against sides likely to be battling against the dreaded drop (Bournemouth, Middlesbrough and Sunderland). They will be pivotal in determining how their season pans out given their poor start. Palace must begin picking up points quickly to prevent them being drawn into the relegation scrap.

A brutal set of April and May fixtures including away clashes at both Manchester clubs could spell nerve-jangling times at Selhurst Park if they don’t accumulate enough points prior to this stage. Bet365 have Palace priced at 3/1 to be relegated from the top-flight for a fifth time.
