Both these German giants can boast a rich history but this will be the first ever all German Champions League final with Bayern Munich looking to go one better than last year and lift the famous Champions League trophy.

In the only previous meeting between the two sides in Europe’s premier club competition, Borussia Dortmund came out on top in the 1997/98 quarter finals when Dortmund were defending champions. They played the first leg in Munich, drawing 0-0 before an injury time goal back in Dortmund settled the tie.

In total, the two clubs have met 100 times in competitive fixtures, Bayern Munich hold the upper hand winning 45 times, 29 have ended in a draw and Dortmund have won 26.

Bayern Munich hold the psychological upper hand going into this Saturday’s Champions League final, they strolled to the Bundesliga title in Germany as well as going unbeaten against Dortmund this season. Both Bundesliga matches ended in a 1-1 draw and Bayern beat Dortmund in both the German Super Cup (2-1) and the German Cup (1-0) this season.

One point of note is Borussia Dortmund’s demolition of Bayern Munich in last season’s Super Cup final when they ran out 5-2 winners, that Bayern Munich team featured seven players who are likely to start the final on Saturday at Wembley.
