Celtic face a tricky task when they play Malmo tonight and with a place in the Champions League proper within reach, Celtic really need to take a lead into the second leg.

Malmo boss Åge Hareide is looking to avenge the defeat suffered as boss of Helsingborgs in 2012/13 when the Hoops defeated his team to clinch a place in the Champions League proper. Ronny Deila, however, will be hoping that Celtic can extend their good start to the season and secure a comfortable home win ahead of a trip to Sweden for the return leg.

 

Hareide has already laid down the gauntlet to Celtic, stating that the team Malmö beat in the previous qualifying round, Red Bull Salzburg, are a better team than Celtic.

 

Deila responded with fighting talk, stating "We'll see on Wednesday. That's when they have to show they are better.” Before adding, "European matches are tough – you win or lose on the smallest details. We'll fight to show Hareide is wrong. The pressure is on him after what he said. "We will find out on Wednesday if they are better."

 

Malmö are midway through their domestic season with a run of three wins in their past four League games, but they are currently lagging behind the leaders in the Allsvenskan, four points off the pace set by IFK Göteborg.

 

Celtic have played just 4four matches of their new domestic campaign and have three wins and a draw to their name. Despite being unbeaten thus far, they have conceded two goals in the last two league games and defensive vulnerabilities seem to play a major theme in Celtic’s recent performances.

 

In Celtic’s last league game against Inverness, they were riding high at 4-0 after some scintillating play brought them their unassailable 4-goal lead. However, they went off the boil for the final 20 minutes and ended up conceding two extremely soft goals.

 

Malmö will be hoping that Celtic’s defensive frailties are once again exposed on Wednesday night, but given the expectations and the occasion, I cannot see Celtic losing their concentration on such a big occasion for my football betting tips.

 

This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides, and at Celtic Park, I feel the Scots will have the advantage.  They must, however, ensure a tighter defence than they showed against Inverness in the final 20 minutes on Saturday. I envisage that The Hoops will set about their task in a rather cagey manner and, like their defensive displays against Qarabag, I don’t see many goals in this two-legged tie.
