World Cup 2014 Golden Boot betting: It may be early days but some bookies are already taking bets on the main contenders to pick up the Golden Boot in this summer’s World Cup.
The likes of Ronaldo (the proper one), Gary Lineker, Eusebio, Gerd Muller and Mario Kempes have won the honour before so we decided to have a look at the main movers and shakers for this summer’s accolade.
There are currently two joint favourites with Lionel Messi and Neymar both at 10/1 (Bet Victor) The best player in the world was always going to be short but Messi’s goalscoring record for Argentina is no way near as good as it is for Barca and Argentina aren’t the force they were, no matter how good he is, if Argentina don’t get very far he can’t score goals, making there seem to be a lack of value here.
Neymar has a great record for Brazil though, grabbing four at last year’s Confederations Cup. He has a record of 27 goals in 44 games for his country and with a year in Europe under his belt, Brazil expected to go far, 10/1 is reasonable for Neymar to be the World Cup 2014 top goalscorer.
The main chasers seem to be Christiano Ronaldo at 20/1 (Betway), Robin Van Persie 20/1 (Bet Victor), Mario Balotelli 25/1 (Bet Victor) and Sergio Aguero 25/1 (Betway). There is bags of quality here and if you fancy one of these to get far in the contest and get some goals they are all worth a punt. Balotelli loves the big stage as he showed two years ago in Poland and Ukraine and the rest all score goals and ignoring Ronaldo is often costly.
Those looking for a bit more a punt also have plenty of options, Thomas Muller won the award in South Africa and he is 40/1 (BetVictor) if you fancy the Bayern man to have another prolific tournament. Fernando Torres picked up the Golden Boot at Euro 2012 and if he starts for Spain will get chances and is 40/1 (Betway). Belgium are a lot of people’s dark horses to do well in the tournament and if Romelu Lukaku carries on how he has at Everton should lead the line and is 33/1 (Betway.)
Finally who are England’s options? Wayne Rooney to be World Cup top goalscorer is the obvious one at 33/1 with Bet Victor but Daniel Sturridge has had a great season to date and is available at 50/1 (Betway) if you fancy a punt.
All strikers want to make their mark on the big stage and things won’t be any different in Brazil. Any of these or a number of others could grab the award and it will certainly be an interesting battle.
