Although a recent thigh injury has been the cause behind the big Belgian’s lack of first team action for Manchester City in recent weeks, Vincent Kompany still has to go down as a player who no longer commands a guaranteed place in Manuel Pellegrini’s starting XI.
Even when fully fit and playing to his prime level of capability, the 29-year-old centre-back has seen his overall game time somewhat restricted this season – despite the fact that Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala have hardly proved the most reliable options for their manager throughout the 2014/15 campaign.
So then, despite gaining recognition as one of Manchester City’s undisputed shining lights during his time at the Etihad, is it safe to assume that Vincent Kompany’s days at the top are now coming to a somewhat inevitable end?
The answer seemingly places the future of the towering defender in a murkier light than most would have perhaps be expected…
Before any criticisms get pointed in the direction of the Man City no. 4 however, it is important to remember just how good Kompany has been since he first arrived in English football in 2008. The Premier League title lifting centre-back joined up with the Citizens after impressing in the Bundesliga with Hamburg as a somewhat unknown entity – but now things couldn’t be much more different for the player in question.
Today Vincent Kompany still goes down as a major name within the European football circuit. His tenaciously organised style at the back has become notorious among fans of English football, and as the defender also gained recognition for his ability to effectively read the game and prowess in the air, the Manchester City captain was certainly worthy of the widespread praise that initially came his way.
At the not so flattering age of 29-years-old however, the player in question sadly seems to be dropping of the boil with every passing season. The former contender for best centre-back plying his trade in the Premier League – and the rest of the world for that matter – has seemingly lost his mojo to a certain extent these days, and it sadly doesn’t look like it’s going to return any time soon.
Kompany simply gets caught out too easily in the current game. His rapidly decreasing lack of pace invariably lands him in trouble almost on a week to week basis, and as the Belgian international no longer seems to have the legs to get back into position quickly enough, the need to draw the foul and take one for the team all too often becomes a necessity for the determined, yet out of form centre-back. Without having a fit and reliable captain to count on throughout the duration of the current season, it really hasn’t come as much of a surprise that Manchester City have looked far from the side that partially dominated domestic proceedings across last year’s campaign.
So, whilst Vincent Kompany certainly isn’t completely finished in the Premier League by any means at the moment, Manuel Pellegrini and the Man City backroom staff must think ahead about replacing their once irreplaceable club captain before the signs of his downfall start to become more and more apparent with every passing game.
As the Citizens are certainly capable of stumping up the cash in their quest to source and adequate new man to fill the void for their side at the back next season however, such an inevitable problem will hardly arrive as much of an issue for the wealthy backers behind Manchester City Football Club.
Whatever becomes of Vincent Kompany in the not too distant future then, the once formidable centre-back certainly deserves acclaim for his overall time spent in the Premier League.
