Are Barcelona Simply Too Strong For Man City?

Whilst Champions League football always proves to be a tough one to predict, Manchester City’s chances against Luis Enrique’s formidable Barcelona initially look slim at best.

It’s not as if Manuel Pellegrini’s players aren’t worthy of progressing to the next round – as their impressive form in the Premier League certainly says they are – it’s just that knocking out Lionel Messi and co. on route wouldn’t be an easy task for any team, in good form or bad.

With that in mind, are Man City capable of triumphantly seeing off Barcelona, or are the Catalans simply too strong for the Citizens to contend with?

Barcelona currently sit second in La Liga, four points off front-runners Real Madrid, and only three points ahead of Diego Simeone’s plucky title holders, Atletico. Such somewhat indifferent domestic form therefore presents a potential opening of vulnerability for which Pellegrini can exploit, as with the likes of Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and David Silva in truly fine form at the moment, any opposing team to Manchester City would have every reason to be worried.

The re-addition of Yaya Toure, back with confidence after winning the 2015 African Nations with Ivory Coast, will also go a long way in spurring City forward and keeping the team in shape, however he is suspended for tonight’s first leg against Barcelona.

With Wilfried Bony in contention to contribute in the Champions League, City actually look in better shape than ever as their much awaited tie with Barcelona approaches tonight.

That said, although Manuel Pellegrini team’s will certainly go into the match in good spirits, the Nou Camp faithful will also be of high moral – mainly because of the recent synergy struck up by their current striking trio, Luis Suarez, Neymar and of course, Lionel Messi. The three world renowned stars have tucked away over 70 goals between them in all competitions this season, and when you consider that Suarez was suspended for the opening stages of the campaign, the stat becomes even more unreal. This summer’s latest edition of ‘bite-gate’ seems a long way off is the distance now, doesn’t it?

Luis Enrique has also been able to call upon the likes of Pedro, Ivan Rakitic and even Gerard Pique to score the goals as well this season, so the likes of Vincent Kompany – who most City fans would admit hasn’t been at his very best this campaign – are simply going to have to pull out a top draw performance against Barca.

As well as proving strong in the final third, Barcelona have also been extremely formidable defensively this season. The Nou Camp faithful have had the pleasure of only seeing their beloved side concede a grand total of 14 goals this season, which by all standards in Spanish and European football, really is an impressive achievement.

Therefore – whilst Manchester City themselves have looked fairly solid this season, playing Barcelona will prove to be a tough step up from what they’re used to in the Premier League. Pellegrini’s side have notoriously lacked Champions League form in recent years, so with that in mind – beating Barca and progressing to the next round still looks unlikely, even if the opening leg gives City the much desired home advantage.
