These two sides come into this fixture on the back of contrasting opening matches – USA got things off to a flyer in their opener, taking the lead after little over 30 seconds before going on to secure a 2-1 victory against Ghana, while the Portuguese were largely spectators as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Germany.

Despite being second favourites for their first encounter, Jurgen Klinsman’s USA put up a real fighting display, showing real grit and determination to force a winning goal late on just minutes after conceding an equaliser. The one thing that really shone through from that display was the USA’s spirit, an early injury to striker Jozy Altidore limited their threat in the final third but it was clear to see that victory meant everything and the side were prepared to fight hard to the death and duly got their rewards.

On the other hand, Paulo Bento will be hoping his Portugal side can bounce back strongly here after they got their competition off to the worst possible start with that 4-0 defeat. The game was all but gifted to the opposition when central defender Pepe got himself sent off for a needless encounter with Germany’s Thomas Muller midway through the first half. Despite being 2-0 down at the time Portugal were still in the game and had created chances of their own. Portugal certainly look capable of bouncing back and with the number of attacking threats they carry (none more so than Cristiano Ronaldo) it is hard to make a case against their warm favouritism for this one in our Portugal v USA predictions and betting tips.
