The kick-off of their campaign in Group G signifies their third ever meeting and third consecutive World Cup encounter; not even FIFA's current top two of Spain and Germany have played one another as many times in football's biggest tournament. There's an edge of predictability too. The Ghanaians triumphed 2-1 in both previous meetings after having taken the lead, been pegged back level and then gone on to win. This happened in the group stages in 2006 before déjà vu struck in the 2010 second round after extra-time.

History may not have provided a notable indication last time, but on 16th June Ghana will no doubt now be favoured by it, especially considering they have never trailed to the USA, and the magnitude of the game which is already being recognised as the battle for third place.

How much of an effect this will have on their chances remains to be seen, but goals are what will invariably get them off to the perfect start against a fairly youthful Ghanaian back-line.

Current form this year has seen Ghana slip to 37 in FIFA's latest world rankings, 24 places behind the USA, after winning just two of their last eight friendlies. The Black Stars did, however, hit South Korea for four in their final warm-up game on Tuesday with Jordan Ayew netting a hat-trick. In contrast, the USA have lost just twice in eight friendlies since securing qualification.

There's no doubt Donovan will be a huge absence for the USA, but will it come down to form or history between the sides on Monday? I'll go for form, although don't be surprised to see the two sides cancel each other out in 30 degree plus temperatures in Natal.
