Yet another Group in this year’s World Cup that at least three of the four teams could all stake their claim to win the group or qualify as runners-up. Group D consists of four-time winners Italy, who will start the tournament as group winner favourites. And Uruguay, who of course, won it against Brazil in the 1950 tournament which Brazil happened to host. England, who are still clinging on to 1966, and Costa Rica, who will want to prove they are no whipping boys.

If I am going to be really honest, then I have to admit that I cannot see England or Costa Rica getting out of this Group for my World Cup tips on Group D. I know England have a young, fresh and exciting squad but it’s just too much too soon. Without enough friendlies to start to really gel as a team and in the intense heat, especially in Manaus, I think Italy’s experience will tell. Likewise, I feel England will get tired against a counter attacking Uruguay team and with or without Suarez they will be punished. As for Costa Rica, the odds of 66/1 say it all really, but they still shouldn’t be underestimated to pick up at least a point.

When weighing up an eventual winner out of Uruguay or Italy there’s only one thing that really swings in a country’s favour, and that is squad depth. While a Uruguay team without the likes of Cavani and Suarez can seem average, Italy just ooze class. With a mix of young talent such as; Insigne, Destro, Immobile and even Balotelli. These players are then balanced out by the experienced players for the Azurri. Pirlo, De Rossi, Motta and Buffon all know what it’s like to do well in big tournaments and how to perform under pressure and this is what separates them from Uruguay and why they will win the Group.
