History dictates that the odds are heavily stacked in favour of those who are top at Christmas. Withy Chelsea’s much publicised struggles in the striking department, Arsenal will be confident of continuing their impressive defensive record intact. Even after their 6-3 drubbing my Manchester City last time out, Arsenal boast the second best defensive record in the league. They have conceded just 17 goals in their 16 games so far. They have only conceded 6 goals at home all campaign, which is truly impressive if you take in to account their 1-3 home loss to Aston Villa on the opening day.

In all honesty, both sides have a very similar goal difference, with Arsenal scoring one more goal, and conceding just one goal less. The thing is, we can read in to facts, stats and figures all we want leading up to a game like this, and it will probably not make the blindest bit of difference. A game as important as this very rarely adheres to the form book. These games often rely on one of the big names standing up and being counted. The likes of Olivier Giroud, Mesut Ozil, Eden Hazard, Oscar… The list goes on. There could be a return for Juan Mata, as he has scored in his last four starts against Arsenal in all competitions.

The bookies have Arsenal as the slight favourites tonight, with William Hill offering them at 6/4. Chelsea are at 11/5 with Coral which could tempt a few, and the draw is priced at 12/5 with a variety of bookmakers.

Tonight’s game will really show whether Wenger and his team have the credentials to win a Premier League title for the first time since the 2003-2004 season. We know Mourinho can do it, as we’ve seen before, and a loss for him tonight won’t rule his side out my any stretch of the imagination. Truthfully, both managers will probably take a point tonight and then look to pick up some easier points over the next few games.
