Uruguay are over-priced to win the World Cup and we take a look at the reasons why you should bet on them now.
With many football fans that I have spoken already starting to guess who could be crowned World Champions next summer, one thing I do notice though is many people, including myself up until recently, forget about the nation that hosted the competition for the very first time in 1930 and have won the World Cup twice, along with twice winning Olympic gold, Uruguay.
For a team that have only failed to get out of the group stages three times in the competition since it started, and with the history, and the players they have, why is it they have been made 33/1 (Betfred) by the bookies to win? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying they’re the favorites to win the World Cup over the likes of current champions Spain or the hosts Brazil, but I do feel they still have a better chance than odds of 33/1 suggest.
The fact that the competition is being held in South America also will help Uruguay have a good World Cup. I know it’s not exactly at home, but that is still an advantage over all the European teams, they will be used to that sort of humidity.
Then comes the squad, has everyone forgot about the summer transfer window, and something about two of the biggest Uruguayan stars being linked with big money moves to PSG and Real Madrid? Of course I’m talking about Edison Cavani, and Luis Suarez. Cavani was in lethal form before his move to PSG, scoring 29 goals in Serie A, that’s why PSG paid the £53 million for him.
How could you also forget Luis Suarez? Yes he has been in the news a lot since his arrival in England, and not all for the right reasons, and if anyone can help Uruguay perform to the best of their ability, it’s this guy. Now we all know what he’s been doing in the Premier League, and since arriving back from the ban or biting Ivanovic, he has looked unstoppable.
His international record also speaks for itself; in 74 appearances he has scored an amazing 39 goals. Compare that to Cavani who has only scored 19 in 58. Another prospect in attack is a 23 year old called Abel Hernandez. For such a young player, he has shown he has what it takes to cope with the pressures of international football.
He impressed during the Confederations Cup in the summer of 2013, especially scoring the four goals against Tahiti. It’s only Tahiti, but still he became only the fourth player to score four goals in one game in the Confederations Cup. They are just three players that stand out for many people. But you must remember about a key figure at the back in Diego Lugano, I know he has only played 2 games for West Brom, but when fit and playing regularly, is a rock at the back. The experience of Diego Forlan is always a good thing as well.
Many players from the squad play in Europe, which also will benefit the squad, but they do still play with the same South American style that you would expect. I feel that you can’t say that Uruguay are favorites to win, but you also can’t write the 2 time winners, off and odds of 33/1 is a little too high if you ask me.
