Bayern Munich vs Chelsea Betting Tips and Super Cup Predictions

Robben goal 2013.jpg

Friday night see’s the European Charity Shield as Champions League winners Bayern Munich play Europa League victors Chelsea at the Eden Arena in Prague in the UEFA Super Cup.

The game is a repeat of the 2012 Champions League final in which Chelsea, despite being battered for the majority of the match, came out on top in a dramatic penalty shootout and Bayern are taken to exact some form of revenge.

Despite coming into this match top of the Premier League table Chelsea (7/2 for the win with Bet365) haven’t been pulling up any trees form wise. They have beaten a terrible Hull side, gained a fortunate win against Villa and put in an insipid display at Old Trafford on Monday night. If they play like that against the current Champions League champions they will get beat and get beat well. Bayern, odds on at 17/20 with William Hill to win the match, are slowly coming to terms with Pep Guardiola’s methods and it’s a Chelsea old boy at FC Hollywood who we side with for our first bet.

Arjen Robben has been in fine form this season scoring five goals in five matches and is taken to find the net against his former teammates. Whilst he is 8/1 with Ladbrokes to net first I like the look of Robben/Bayern in the Score/Win market. Currently trading at 10/3 with Ladbrokes that price shouldn’t be ignored.

The referee for the game is Jonas Eriksson. Looking at his record when officiating in Europe last season it would seem that he has a penchant for showing a card. In the seven matches he took charge of last season he dished out 32 cards, an average of just over +4.5 cards each game. So what? I hear you cry. Well I see the game panning out akin to that of the 2012 Champion League final with Die Bayern dominating possession and their main threats coming from the wings in the guise of Robben and Ribery.

With that in mind you’d expect Chelsea’s full backs to have their hands full for the majority of the evening and as such are more than liable to pick up a card. So far this season Chelsea’s full backs have been Ivanovic and Cole and they are currently 3/1 and 4/1 respectively to pick up a card.

Ivanovic, who was booked in the Super Cup last season, could make way for the Spanish right back César Azpilicueta.  Azpilicueta picked up eight bookings last season and was booked by this referee in the Europa League semi-final last May and he’s currently 5/2 to receive a card.  Ashley Cole was booked the last time these two met and with Robben attacking him inside and out from the right flank he can make that two in two. Whoever makes the line up in the right back berth* must be backed along with Ashley Cole.
