David Weir has his first taste of management as he officially starts his tenure at Sheffield United. He will be happy with his summer business, splashing out £200,000 on in demand striker Lyle Taylor who scored 24 goals at Falkirk last season, although he is unproven in England.

Weir also acquired a few clever free signings in the shape of former Watford man Sean McGinty and also Febian Brandy. To replace the departing Barry Robson England U20 captain Conor Coady has been signed on loan from Liverpool.

Notts County have lost Alan Judge, Neal Bishop and Jeff Hughes but have replaced them with David Bell, Mark Fotheringham and Danny Haynes.  The former could prove to be the key signing of their summer if he can keep fit.

Pre-season results generally mean nothing, but they can be good indicators to how a team will set up. Notts County have shown lots of attacking intent over pre-season, drawing 3-3 at Championship Ipswich most recently. They were also denied a famous win over Galatasaray by late Burak Yilmaz and Wesley Sneijder goals.

Sheffield United on the other hand look more content to keep things tight, winning 1-0 three times over pre-season. Only Swindon conceded fewer goals last season so it’s no surprise to see the Blades carrying over their solid defensive form.

So what will give?

I can see both of these sides competing for the play-offs and there won’t be much difference in class, although the difference in style should make for an interesting match. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sheffield United picking off the Magpies, but County have enough quality to get something from the game.

My favourite picks for Man of the Match include Harry McGuire at 25/1 (Bet Victor); United’s Player of the Year for the past two seasons who will be crucial in thwarting County.

At the other end County captain David Leacock will be worth backing at 16/1 (Bet Victor) as he is everything the commentators will look for in a man of the match.

At the top of the market Lyle Taylor (6/1 Bet Victor) will be in with a shout if he manages to grab a debut goal or two.
