The favourites in the outright betting are currently the hosts Brazil (6/4 William Hill) and as well as being in the comfort of their home surroundings, the Samba boys have a strong record when they have competed in this competition. Brazil have won the Confederations Cup three times in six appearances since 1997 including the last two renewals in 2005 and 2009. They also reached the final in the 1999 tournament.
Spain are second favourites in the betting at odds of 7/4 (William Hill) but the omens are not good for European sides in this tournament. Since the tournament was known as the Confederations Cup in 1997 there have been six, and only France (twice) have reached the final. They were victorious in both finals.
Another trend that is worth considering is that the favourites in the betting rarely make it to meet in the final. The likes of Australia, Mexico, Japan, Cameroon and the United States have all graced the final since 1997 and the same could happen again this year. The likes of Uruguay (11/1 Betway) and Mexico (14/1 Betway) are the most interesting contenders, in conditions they will be familiar with their betting odds appeal to an each-way punt.
Despite the strong history of the bigger priced teams making the final, there is an equally storong history of them eventually getting beat. Given Brazil are favourites, with a great record and on home soil they are worthy favourites in the betting and the recent 3-0 triumph over France came just at the right time.
Picking a team to meet Brazil in the final is a tough call between Uruguay and Mexico and it could come down to second guessing their path. Mexico have the tougher task because they are grouped with Brazil and Italy, if they finish second in their group they will likely meet Spain in the semi-final whereas Uruguay have a gimmie against Tahiti in their group, should they finish behind Spain in Group B as expected they will fancy their chances against either Mexico or Italy.
In a tough call, Uruguay to reach the final (3/1 with Betway) and Brazil vs Uruguay in the name the finalists market (14/1 with Bet Victor) could be the ways to play your bets for the two week tournament. Fancy a saver on Brazil v Mexico in the final? That’s an 11/1 chance.
