The Toffee’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over West Brom on Wednesday night has proven that David Moyes’ side are a genuine contender for a top four spot this season. While many have expected the Merseysiders to drop back into the chasing pack, victory over the Baggies leaves them only a point behind fourth-placed Tottenham, and they will look to Saturday’s home tie against struggling Aston Villa as a chance to pick up another three points and create more daylight between themselves and Arsenal and Liverpool.
Aston Villa are in real free-fall at the moment, and they sit second from bottom only four points ahead of QPR. Paul Lambert’s demeanour and body language in his post-game interview after Tuesday night’s defeat to Newcastle, reflected his side’s confidence who have lost five of their last seven league games, along with exits in both cup competitions to lower league opposion.
Aston Villa boast the worst defensive record in the league, and a visit to Goodison Park is not what they need right now. Everton to win to nil is best priced @ 5/4, but for our accumulator I’m going with the straight win for the home side.
Recommendation: Everton to win @ 2/5
West Ham vs Swansea
West Ham are another side suffering a drastic dip in form. They have lost six of their last nine league games, and most recently were on the receiving end of comprehensive defeats to Sunderland, Arsenal and Fulham. A bonus for them will be the return of Andy Carroll from injury. He came off the bench with fifteen minutes to go against Fulham on Wednesday night and will look for a starting spot when Swansea travel to London on Saturday.
Michael Laudrup’s side are unbeaten in seven league games, and have the Capitol One Cup final to look forward to at the end of February. I have been a fan of Swansea City’s style of play since Brendan Rogers was at the helm, but Laudrup has managed to take it to the next level again, and surely must be short listed for manager of the year. Swansea have the best defensive record in the league away from home, and will prove yet again very tough to break down. I expect a low scoring game, with the draw a very viable option @ 12/5, but I think Swansea have really matured as a team under Laudrup, and could sneak this game by the odd goal. For the purpose of the accumulator, I’m taking the safer option of Swansea +1 goal on the handicap.
Recommendation: Swansea (+1) to win @ 8/13
Tranmere vs Carlisle
Tranmere I believe are overpriced @ 10/11 to beat their opponents Carlisle on Saturday afternoon. Tranmere lead the League One table along with Doncaster, and have won five of their last six league games, only conceding three goals in those games. They have only conceded eleven goals at home all season from fourteen games, and sit twenty-three points ahead of Carlisle in the league table.
Carlisle have already conceded fifty league goals this year, one of the worst in the division.
The sides have already met once this season already with Carlisle on the wrong end of a 3-0 hammering on their own turf. The gulf in class in there for all to see, and providing Tranmere keep up their recent run of good form, they will have too much for Carlisle.
Recommendation: Tranmere to win @ 10/11
Walsall vs Oldham
Another side who I believe are overpriced are Walsall @ 5/4 to beat Oldham this weekend. Before their shock 2-0 loss to Colchester last weekend, Walsall had won six of their last seven league games, scoring fifteen goals in the process. They obviously did not treat Colchester with enough respect on the day, who were on a nine game losing streak, but manager Dean Smith will have read them the riot act after their dismal display, and will ensure that the correct preparation will be made before Oldham travel to the Bescot Stadium.
Oldham’s giant-killing win against Liverpool last weekend in the FA Cup will have offered them a brief respite from their abysmal league form. They have lost eight of their last ten league games, and Paul Dickov’s future as manager is still under severe pressure according to the club’s chairman despite their heroic cup exploits against Liverpool. Walsall are certainly a team on an upward curve, and that’s why I’m including them in this weekend’s accumulator.
Recommendation: Walsall to win @ 5/4
