Both Hull and Sheffield Wednesday come into to this game after being held to draws by lower league opposition in the FA Cup 3rd round, with Leyton Orient and MK Dons respectively looking forward to another chance at a Championship scalp.
However, where the league is concerned these Yorkshire teams are enjoying very different seasons, with the Sheffield club battling at the bottom of the table whilst Hull have been unbeaten since November and find themselves in an automatic promotion spot.
Hats off to Steve Bruce. Unfairly dismissed in many people’s eyes by Sunderland last year, who have hardly fared much better since under Martin O’Neil, he has very quietly gone about his business and has produced this season’s surprise package for promotion back to the top tier. Only league leaders Cardiff have conceded fewer goals at home, and the capture in the summer of Sone Aluko from Rangers has been a real coup, with the Nigerian scoring eight times already in the league. In midfield, former West Brom playmaker and Slovenian international Robert Koren has chipped in with six goals as well as providing his side with a creative spark.
Sheffield Wednesday, before defeat to Burnley on New Years Day, were in a good run of form through December, with three wins and a draw giving them hope that they might avoid the drop come May. Dave Jones is an experienced manager and there are certainly signs that his side are capable of survival in this league, but only Derby and Ipswich have scored fewer than the Owls’ 11 goals on the road this term.
Hull should win a game of few goals, with Aluko and Koren the ones to watch in the goalscorer markets.
