The away side are clear favourites here and despite their early season problems, they now beginning to look like Champions League contenders once more. Before the defeat to Chelsea last week, they had won four league games in a row, including the memorable away victory at Man Utd. They have scored three goals in both their two most recent away fixtures too.
Jermain Defoe notched his fifth league goal of the season last weekend and his form has been so impressive that Emmanuel Adebayor has hardly had an opportunity in the side. The England striker incidentally scored a hat-trick the last time Tottenham beat Southampton in the top flight, back in December 2004, so he will be a key figure in the goal markets. Gareth Bale will also be under the spotlight as he returns to his boyhood club in spectacular form for club and country and after his absence against Chelsea due to personal reasons, expect him to be fresh and keen to make an impact.
Southampton have picked up just four points out of a possible twenty-four and currently sit in the relegation zone. The defeat to West Ham last weekend seemed to symbolise their season so far – capable in the attacking third but not capable in the defensive third. Encouragingly, they have scored in every game so far except the home defeat to Wigan and have more goals than any side in the bottom half of the table. However, they have conceded on average three goals a game, which will make it almost impossible for the side to pick up points consistently. They have just one win at home from four fixtures so far too.
The sides last contested this fixture in the Premier League in 2004/2005 and amazingly in that season and the two years preceding it, Southampton won this corresponding fixture 1-0 each time. Don’t expect a similar result this time around – Tottenham’s attacking riches will punish the home side’s leaky defence. Expect Spurs to start slowly though – they have scored just a fifth of their league goals in the first half this season.
