Manchester United couldn't have asked for a nicer, gentler Champions League warm up than the annual visit of masochists, Wigan Athletic. Not so much a case of Martinez' men rolling over to have their collective tummy tickled, more a case of bending over to have their collective rear violated. Ahem. Anyway. You get the drift – their new big time boys RvP and Kagawa had a rest, the Ginger Prince celebrated his 700th appearance with a goal, and new boys Buttner and Powell both scored too, Powell with a particularly sublime shimmy and shot to make it four nil.
Galatasaray may play their home games in Dante's Inferno, but over the years they have been more Divine Comedy away from home in Europe's elite competition. Actually, I wonder if their team coach is laid on by National Express when they come to England? Very obscure promotional opportunity for some marketing drone out there. Or there would be if they weren't all dicking about on Pinterest and listening to Coldplay. But, and you'll be used to this by now I hope dear reader, I digress.
United at a best priced 1/3 don't really appeal, even though Fergie won't allow a repeat of last year's lackadaisical group stage performances and they will in all likelihood win at a canter, it's not a wade I'm comfortable recommending.
So, to my tips. Three of'em. All relatively small stakes.
Shinji Kagawa has looked like he will be a great addition thus far, but even as a veteran of two Bundesliga titles won in perhaps the closest elite league to ours in terms of pace and physicality, he has already conceded that he will need to work on his body strength to adapt to the PL. Facing a more continental style in this one means that he will probably get the extra yard he currently needs to be really effective. We can reap the rewards in Boylesports new assists market with a play on the 2/1 for him to assist any goal.
Next. RvP. Two starts. Four goals. And he's just warming up. You can get 4/1 with Bwin for him to bury two or more in this one. Get on it.
Finally, a longer odds tickle which might be worth a punt. If this does turn into a stroll, Ferguson may very well give new young additions some game time and valuable experience. He's got form for doing this in home games at all levels, and if he does unleash Nick Powell late on, then Bwin's 9/1 for him to score last again might well bear fruit.
