Southampton vs Sunderland Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

Southampton vs Sunderland predictions and football betting tips for this week’s EFL Cup fixture including an advised bet from the handicap market.

Southampton look to continue their impressive start to the season when they face Premier League strugglers Sunderland on Wednesday night in the EFL cup. Here are some tips and predictions for the game on the south coast.

Southampton continue to defy the odds each season with new players and new managers but they always have a very good season and it seems as if nothing can disrupt the Saints. Charlie Austin and Nathan Redmond have had fantastic starts to the season and are both being tipped for potential England call-ups if they continue their form and the defensive partnership of Jose Fonte and Virgil Van Dijk is becoming one of the best in the Premier League and judging on their performance against Manchester City on Sunday I will not argue with that. They drew 1-1 at the Etihad and they are currently sitting eighth in the league with hopes of getting into Europe once again this season. They dominated Crystal Palace in the previous round when they won 2-0 and judging on that team selection Claude Puel is taking this competition seriously and I expect another strong side here.

Sunderland have had an awful start to the season and David Moyes is odds on to be the next manager to leave after no win in nine league games. They lost to a last-minute Winston Reid winner on Saturday against West Ham and they are already five points away from safety and it looks as if this could be the season that they get relegated to the Championship after years of great escapes. Although they are in the fourth round of the EFL cup, their performances in this competition have been far from convincing with a 1-0 home victory over Shrewsbury in the 2nd round and they needed two late Paddy Mcnair goals to knock out QPR in the last round.  The form suggests this game can only go one way and I certainly agree.

Southampton vs Sunderland Predictions

My first Southampton vs Sunderland prediction for the EFL Cup tie is going to be Southampton-1 in the handicap market. This means that Southampton must win by two or more clear goals and I think this is a cracking bet. The Saints are in great form and will be putting out a strong side and Sunderland will be looking to rest players so I think that Puel’s men will win comfortably and the odds for this are 6/5 at Paddy Power.

Southampton (-1 handicap) – 6/5 with Paddy Power.

My second Southampton vs Sunderland betting tip is going to be for Southampton to grab a goal before the 30th minute. As mentioned before I think they will be too strong for David Moyes’ side and will look to grab a goal early. They scored in the 27th minute against Manchester City at the weekend and if they can do it against the league leaders then they can do it against the side who haven’t won a match this season. Odds for Southampton to score before the 30th minute is 23/20 at William Hill.

Southampton vs Sunderland Team News

As mentioned earlier Southampton fielded a strong side in the previous round and I don’t expect too many changes here. James Ward-Prowse will probably get a start and I expect Shane Long to start up front with Jay Rodriguez also getting some minutes.  David Moyes has already said that he will be resting some players with a lunchtime kick off against Arsenal on Saturday so Victor Anichebe will lead the line and Moyes may also give some youngsters their debuts like he has in previous rounds.

Head to Head Stats

Sunderland will be encouraged with the fact that the drew 1-1 against Southampton earlier this season at St Mary’s however they did lose 8-0 here in the Premier League back in 2014. In their last League Cup meeting Sunderland did beat Southampton 2-1 and this was when they reached the final back in the 2013/14 season.

Southampton vs Sunderland Betting Odds

Southampton are strong favourites for this match and are 4/9 to win at Coral. Bet Victor are best priced 19/5 for the draw and Bet365 are offering 8/1 for Sunderland to win. Charlie Austin leads the first goal scorer market and is 10/3 at Ladbrokes and Jay Rodriguez scored when these sides met in August and he is 5/1 to open the scoring on Wednesday night.
