The Swans had to overcome some edgy times last season which in the end saw the club finish in a respectable 12th position.
Since their promotion to the top-flight of English football in 2011, the Welsh club have developed a reputation for playing attractive football with an emphasis on retaining possession and patient build-up play. This style has seen them frequently exceed expectations for a club of small stature in comparison to the heavyweights of the Premier League.
Swansea City vs. Liverpool Match Preview
A spirited display against a seemingly invincible Manchester City illustrated that Guidolin still has the backing of his players, although they face another formidable challenge this weekend as a rampant Liverpool visit the Liberty Stadium. Jurgen Klopp’s side go into the game on the back of three straight Premier League victories, including last Saturday’s emphatic 5-1 demolition of Hull.
At present, Liverpool have an aura about them – abound with energy and playing with a swagger that the red half of Merseyside have not witnessed for some time. Liverpool odds with Bet365 are 4/9 and I will be more than surprised if the outcome is anything but three points for the away side.
Injuries
Tricky winger Nathan Dyer is expected to be out until mid-November with an ankle injury.
Swansea City’s Star Players
Icelandic international and set-piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson netted 11 times last season and was a key presence in his country’s historical run to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.
Midfielder Leon Britton is a model of consistency, averaging a pass completion rate of 88% last season and this steadiness could be the perfect foil for summer signing Leroy Fer whose box-to-box displays have seen him notch three times in their opening six games.
The other standout buy is Spanish World Cup winner Fernando Llorente who finally broke his Swansea duck in the defeat against City with a ferocious left-footed strike. The 31-year-old brings great experience and has scored goals throughout his career which has seen him represent the likes of Athletic Bilbao and Juventus. The Swans will be hopeful that the Spaniard can go on and add more goals to his tally now that he is opened his account for the club.
Predicted Finish
With just one win to their name, Francesco Guidolin’s side have endured a difficult start to the season, but they have more than enough quality to avoid being dragged into another dogfight to beat the drop. Another mid-table finish of 13th is what I predict for the Swans, although there has to come a point where they set their targets higher and aim to push onto the next level of the Premier League pyramid.
History Of Swansea City
Swansea were founded in 1912 and in 2011 became the first Welsh club to reach the Premier League since its inception in 1992. A year on following their promotion, Swansea defeated Bradford City 5-0 in the League Cup final to win the club’s first ever piece of major silverware.
Managers
Current Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers guided the club to the top-flight through the play-offs and his replacement – former Danish playmaker Michael Laudrup inspired the 2013 League Cup success.
Key Games To Look Out For
December looks set to be a crucial month for the Swans with a succession of matches against teams likely to finish in the lower echelons of the division. Sunderland and Bournemouth both visit the Liberty Stadium, whilst Swansea face trips to West Brom and Middlesborough. This demanding period of matches will shape their objectives ahead of the second half of the season.
