When Chelsea FC released details of its home kit for the 2016/17 season, it is fair to say that the cost of £95 (for the shirt alone) outraged Blues fans, many of whom derided it as “madness” and “pure greed” on social media. Yet this begs the question – how does the cost of each new Premier League home kit compare with the quality of each squad?
Tottenham Hotspur
Cost of home shirt: £55
With the 5th most expensive home kit in the 2016/17 Premier League season, Tottenham are actually 6th favourites to win the league overall. Sky Bet have Spurs at 10/1 to win the league, behind Liverpool in 5th place at 8/1.
However, Bet365 give Liverpool and Spurs equal chances to come top, with odds of 9/1 apiece. Liverpool’s home shirt cost £50, which makes it the 14th most expensive in the Premier League. It’s already becoming clear that you may not want to stake your football free bets on the cost of a shirt as a reflection of a team’s chances in the new season.
Manchester United
Cost of home shirt: £60
After three seasons of lacklustre football at the Theatre of Dreams, Manchester United are now second favourites to win the Premier League. This comes thanks to the additions of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba et al, as well as the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager.
United are the richest club in the Premier League and are commercially savvy in the extreme. Yet despite this, they are not asking fans to cover the cost of Pogba for a world record £89 million (well not really). The cost of £60 is quite reasonable when you consider the cost of shirts higher up on this list…
Chelsea
Cost of home shirt: £95
As we mentioned at the start of this article, the cost of Chelsea’s home shirt caused uproar on social media. And considering that it costs £30 more than the next most expensive shirt, we can see why!
However, it is quite fitting that the team with the 3rd most expensive shirt are also 3rd favourites to win the Premier League. Ladbrokes has the Blues at 11/2 to win the league, just in front of Arsenal at 6/1.
Manchester City
Cost of home shirt: £95
Manchester City’s home shirt costs £95, which is equal to that of Chelsea. City are favourites to win the Premier League overall. The arrival of Pep Guardiola and the signings of Ilkay Gundogan and John Stones have no doubt increased their chances of coming top by the end of the season. City sit at 5/2 from Bet365, which puts them some way ahead of their Manchester rivals at 10/3.
Arsenal
Cost of home shirt: £100
Ah, Arsenal – the perennial bottlers of the Premier League. The Gunners haven’t won the league since 2004, and they don’t spend massive amounts (in relative terms) on players either.
Yet for some reason, the club sees fit to charge the most for its home kits, as well as its match day tickets. Arsene Wenger’s men are 4th favourites overall, despite coming 2nd last season. Ladbrokes, Sky Bet, Bet365 and others have the Gunners at 6/1 to win the league behind Chelsea, United and City.
