Middlesbrough underdogs in Premier League – fancy a flutter?

Fancy Middlesbrough’s chances in the Premier League this season? Not a lot of people do; this is clear from William Hill's Middlesbrough odds. In fact, the bookies have the Teeside club at 1000/1 to win the Premier League.

But given that Leicester City won the league having started the season at 5000/1 last year, you can take heart from the fact that Boro appear to be five times more likely to win the League than the current champions were. According to reports, the bookies had to hand over a total £25 million to a few lucky punters who bet on the Midlands club to come top at the end of last season.

In fact, the 2015-16 season threw up a whole load of surprises. Manchester City came fourth behind Spurs in third place. Minnows Bournemouth were expected to go straight back down to the Championship after getting promoted the previous season – yet the Cherries survived. So did Watford.

What are Boro’s chances this season?

Putting them at 5/4 to be relegated, William Hill don’t seem to think much of Boro’s chances of avoiding the drop. Yet with the additions of Negredo and three-time Champions League winner Victor Valdes now in the squad, it would be foolish to write them off completely. This is especially true in light of the shocks of last year.

In fact, many Boro fans have the same idea. Following Middlesbrough’s play-off win over Brighton in May, the pitch invasion had barely settled before bookies started releasing their odds for the North East club in the new season.

Following promotion to the Premier League, Boro owner Steve Gibson has vowed that the club will “have a go”. Meanwhile, the signings of two very good players may well hold his team in good stead.

If you’re more confident of head coach Aitor Karanka’s chances of leading his squad away from danger in the top flight, William Hill also offer odds of 8/1 on a top 10 finish. You can also go for 80/1 on Boro to finish in the top six.

Even if you think the league title is out of Middlesbrough’s reach, finishing sixth wouldn’t be bad – and at 80/1 it may be worth a punt.
