Birmingham City open their 2016/17 Championship season against Cardiff City this weekend and our Championship predictions for the match include the best odds for each selection.
These two teams were only separated by two places in the Championship table last season and they ended last season with a 1-1 draw against each other on the final day of the season. The start of the season matches are usually hard to predict and this one looks one of the closest on paper this weekend.
Birmingham City vs Cardiff City Preview
Birmingham City
Birmingham have struggled since returning to the Championship from the top flight and this could be another mid-table season for the Midlands side. They have only added two new players in the close season and have had a real mixed bag of pre-season friendly results. They have lost two, drawn two and won four and one positive is that they have scored goals. Four against Kidderminster in their last friendly is perfect preparation for this fixture.
Cardiff City
Cardiff have played six friendlies and won three of them, their latest was a 1-0 loss to Premier League Bournemouth which is not a disgraceful result. They have made four additions over the summer and will looking to improve on last season, they are another Championship team who have struggled to get back into the Premier League since relegation.
Birmingham vs Cardiff Predictions
The Birmingham v Cardiff betting odds are close and for my predictions I am expecting a close match. Birmingham ended last season with three home draws and no home win in seven and Cardiff’s away form was similarly poor, with one away win in their last eight. With this in mind I wouldn’t be at all surprised if these teams shared the spoils so my first Birmingham vs Cardiff betting tip is for the match to end a draw.

A correct score bet on a 1-1 draw would back up my match result prediction for Birmingham vs Cardiff but rather than putting all our eggs in the draw basket it might be better to go with a goalscorer bet instead. Clayton Donaldson is expected to lead the Birmingham line and he bagged 11 times last season, he’s 2/1 with Bet Victor to score anytime and that’s my second Birmingham vs Cardiff betting tip for this weekend’s Championship fixture.
