England play Russia in their Euro 2016 opening match this weekend and the England starting line-up has thrown up much debate in the media.
Here at thatsagoal we have predicted the England starting line-up that Roy will pick, this isn’t the team we’d like to see start but after the failed diamond against Portugal, England could go back to a more conventional 4-3-3 formation with Wayne Rooney playing behind Harry Kane in a deeper role than usual.
England Predicted Starting 11 vs Russia
Joe Hart, Chris Smailling, Gary Cahill and Danny Rose look sure to start and Kyle Walker is more than likely going to start at right back ahead of Nathanial Clyne. Eric Dier will be in the holding roll and from there is where it starts getting tricky to pick the rest of the England team. We think Roy will go with Jack Wilshere in the opening match against Russia, he came on as a late substitute against Portugal and linked the play well, trying to play balls into dangerous areas. This could mean Dele Alli misses out in the starting line-up, this would be really harsh but we’re hoping Hodgson doesn’t play players out of position in the first match.

We’ve then got Wayne Rooney the most advanced of the midfield three. On the wings it could be Raheem Sterling one side and then possibly Adam Lallana on the other. Lallana thrived under Jurgen Klopp in the latter stages of the season for Liverpool and could be the perfect fit on the England right with his hard working attitude covering the adventurous Kyle Walker, and direct running causing problems for the ageing Russia back line.
Up front it goes without saying that Harry Kane will start, meaning Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge will have to settle for a place on the bench.
How Could a Diamond Work?
If Hodgson does decide to stick with his diamond formation, then expect Sterling and Lallana to drop out and Alli and Vardy to come in. Vardy will play alongside Kane up front and Dele Alli will slot into one of the wider midfield roles alongside Jack Wilshere. Rooney at the top and Dier at the bottom. This formation could work well with the players in the England squad but against Portugal Vardy and Kane were asked to split into wide forwards and all their threat was gone. They need to be played as a real from two and leave Rooney deeper, with the full backs being slightly more cautious moving forward.
