Euro 2016: The Players Lighting Up The Premier League But May Not Make It To France

The Premier League never ceases to amaze. This season has been one of the most exciting in the competition’s history and has seen the form book turned completely upside down.

The likes of Chelsea and Eden Hazard have struggled to the point where it’s unlikely they’ll be enjoying European football next year, while Leicester City and the magnificent performances of Vardy, Mahrez, and Kante have virtually guaranteed them a Champions League spot.

All this has meant that with so much new talent emerging, international bosses will have a real headache when it comes to picking their Euro 2016 squads.

Across the Premier League there have been a number of players putting in some show-stopping displays, yet they’re far from guaranteed a place in France. We take a look at four in-form players who will be biting their nails ahead of squad selection time in May…

Dimitri Payet

Euro 2016 Payet

Plucked from Marseille in the summer for around £10.7million, Dimitri Payet has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League and has had plenty of the big clubs asking the question, “how did we miss out on this guy?”

He’s scored seven goals in 19 league games for the Hammers and is an influential figure on a gamely basis. When this guy his ticking, West Ham are generally winning. His goal figure is matched by his assist record and France will certainly be a better outfit with him in the squad. Didier Deschamps is yet to be convinced though and he could be controversially left out come June.

Danny Drinkwater

Euro 2016 Drinkwater

Much of the praise heading in Leicester’s direction have been towards both Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, but you can’t ignore the solid work being done in the heart of midfield from Danny Drinkwater. He gives the pair license to let loose and has been a major factor in the Foxes success.

Roy Hodgson appears close to calling up the former Manchester United academy star and Claudio Ranieri certainly believes he’s ready. He’s outshining the likes of Carrick, Wilshere, and Jordan Henderson in domestic football, so is there any reason he can’t in international too?

N’Golo Kante

Euro 2016 Kante

Sitting next to Drinkwater in the heart of the Leicester midfield is N’Golo Kante, a Frenchman who has proved to be a real giant despite being only 5’6”.

After joining from Caen in August for a reported £5.6million he’s become a real star, becoming the first player to reach 100 interceptions this season. He covers every blade of grass every week and has got the attention of Deschamps, who has admitted he is considering calling up the 24-year-old.

If he continues to dominate even the most creative of midfields he must surely be in with a chance, and in a French team would allow the likes of Anthony Martial, Antoine Griezmann, and Paul Pogba to go forward and shine.

Hector Bellerin

Euro 2016 Bellarin

You won’t find a faster full-back in the Premier League than Hector Bellerin, and the 20-year-old Spaniard has really kicked on this season. He’s made the position his own in that Arsenal side, but faces tough competition if he’s going to break into the Spanish national team.

He’s yet to be capped by his country with the likes of Juanfran, Dani Carvajal, and Mario Gaspar also fighting to play in the right-back position. If he was from any other nation he’d be a nailed on starter this summer. Unfortunately, he may not even make the Spain squad at all.
