The European Championships are only a few months away and whilst as fans we simply cannot wait, there are a few players who will be currently living in fear; fear they may not get selected by Roy when the England Euro 2016 squad is announced in May.
It’s been an interesting season in the Premier League with the likes of John Stones, Jamie Vardy, Dele Alli, and Ryan Mason all heaping the pressure on England regulars with their stunning performances lifting them right into contention for the summer.
But which players will be currently quaking in their multi-coloured boots at the thought of being left out for one of England’s new breed? With many players warming up the bench or the physio’s table in recent weeks and months, we take a look at the players who really need game time ahead of the flight to France in June…
Gary Cahill
Gary Cahill has been a staple in the England team since 2011 but his place could be seriously under threat with the imperious form of John Stones at the heart of Everton’s defence and the revitalisation of Chris Smalling this season.
The 30-year-old has recently announced he would quit Chelsea to safeguard a place in Hodgson’s side. Game time will be essential if he’s going to earn his place at the competition and it’s unlikely he’ll be allowed to leave with the January transfer window drawing ever closer to shutting.
Andros Townsend
It’s been a rather hellish few months for Andros Townsend but is nightmare is over after joining Newcastle United for £12million this month.
The winger has struggled for minutes with former club Tottenham and hadn’t played in the first team since October. You can’t get called up for the England team if you’re playing for the Under 21 side of your club and he’ll be relieved to start again at St James’ Park.
There are a large amount of wingers for Hodgson to select so all will be on Townsend to put in some stellar performances between now and the end of the season if he’s going to be in that 23-man squad.
Daniel Sturridge
Just what has happened to Daniel Sturridge? He’s made a grand total of six appearances this season with injury dogging his entire campaign. Liverpool appear to be growing frustrated with the striker, with rumours circulating they could sell the striker come the summer.
Graeme Souness believes he can no longer be relied upon, whilst Brendan Rodgers believes they should stick with him. But what about for England?
Well with the likes of Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane firing on all cylinders, his dreams of being England’s number one man are evaporating, and even with a run of form between now (or whenever he gets fit) and the end of the season, he could be struggling to make the grade.
Fabian Delph
Despite a big move to Manchester City in the summer, Fabian Delph’s England career is very much in doubt, and it’s for that exact reason. Whilst Gary Cahill is hunting for game time, it appears Delph was willing to give it up, fighting a losing battle against the likes of Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, David Silva, and the rest of the superstars in the City midfield.
With a number of young guns expected to be challenging for Roy’s squad, Delph could find himself left out, unless he gets an extended run at the Etihad over the course of the next few months.
Danny Welbeck
When Danny Welbeck returns to the Arsenal team it will be like having a new signing. The 25-year-old has been out for around a year and is finally back in training, but it’s unlikely he’ll feature in the first team for at least another month.
That means plenty of goals to score if he’s going to oust Jamie Vardy from the England squad. In terms of goals, it’s been a fantastic year for English football, and with Charlie Austin now back in the Premier League with Southampton that’s another player who could spoil the Welbeck party.
Jack Wilshere
Like Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshere is back in training with Arsenal and will need a good few months if he’s going to play a key role in England’s Euro 2016 quest. Roy Hodgson is a big fan of the 24-year-old midfielder but with him continually stricken with injury Dele Alli at rivals Spurs could be a safer option.
Alli is impressing hugely and could well be in the heart of England’s midfield for many years to come. Jack will have to come back with something pretty spectacular if he’s going to match him.
