Should Chelsea go-ahead and sack Jose Mourinho?

When the 2015/16 campaign was first upon us all this summer, very few expected the Blues to fall short of delivering the goods once again this season. Barring the many millions of pounds behind Manchester City of course, Chelsea were in-fact singled out as strong favourites to retain the Premier League title for the second year in a row, whilst going on to impress football fans in general with their efficient work out on the pitch.

Both Pedro and Radamel Falcao were sworn in at Stamford Bridge earlier on this year, the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard were already in place to continue their fine form of last term – and even though such a bold ambition hadn’t yet been achieved by the Blues manager in the past – Jose Mourinho was largely expected to maintain his dominance among the English top flight, and even begin to emulate the kind of legacy Sir Alex Ferguson famously built at Old Trafford.

…How wrong all that so-called expert analysis eventually turned out to be. Chelsea currently sit a lowly 16th in the league table, having lost seven games out of twelve league fixtures already this season. The Champions League has also proved a somewhat difficult task for the Blues this year, after previously being knocked out of the Capital One Cup at the hands of Stoke City.

So then, should the once untouchable – Jose Mourinho – maintain his position at the Bridge this season, or should Roman Abramovich do the unthinkable and potentially sack the Portuguese tactician before it’s too late?

Well, seeing as the Stamford Bridge hierarchy have already made their current position on the subject clear surrounding their backing of Mourinho, the latter part of that question seemingly won’t be taking place…yet, at least. The 52-year-old’s place in the Chelsea dug-out is said not to be under immediate threat for the time being.

However if the results fail to improve for the Blues in the not too distant future, will Abramovich maintain his resolute stance? The Russian oligarch has proven to have a rather itchy trigger-finger in the past – something Jose Mourinho has in-fact already experienced at Stamford Bridge of course – and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him act hastily once again.

As things currently stand, his side simply look a complete shadow of the team that proved oh so dominant last season. The likes of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic just don’t seem at the races, the entire Chelsea back-line looks as if they’ve never even played alongside one another before – and as for the once mercurial figure of Eden Hazard at the Bridge – zero goals in twelve Premier League appearances ultimately tells you all you need to know…

Chelsea have been utterly hapless all season, and although many of his players have seemingly failed to turn up for the 2015/16 campaign, Jose Mourinho simply must take the lion’s share of the blame. He just hasn’t helped matters at all down at Stamford Bridge this term, raising certain question-marks around his current state of mind behind the scenes at Chelsea.

From the somewhat peculiar Eva Carneiro & Jon Fearn saga earlier on in the campaign, to the strange behaviour of his backroom staff away at Upton Park – Jose Mourinho and his odd entourage have certainly become a bit too big for their boots in recent months it seems.

The nonsensical celebrity fuelled image surrounding the current Chelsea boss has most definitely hindered his side out on the pitch, the enigmatic manager has routinely made a fool of himself when dealing with post-match interviews, and the whole ‘everybody is against us’ theory that Mourinho himself championed not so long ago has gotten old rather quickly – it must be said.

Put in no uncertain terms, Jose Mourinho doesn’t really have much material to back his cause this season. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the 52-year-old should be sacked just yet. As much as his detractors would love to see the back of the Blues boss for his somewhat undignified name-calling practices towards other managers and what not, there ultimately aren’t many other top-class coaches out there quite ready to pick up where the Portuguese tactician could potentially leave off.

Carlo Ancelotti has already been through the Chelsea circus once before in his career, Jurgen Klopp has already moved to Liverpool, Diego Simeone seemingly isn’t quite ready for such a massive challenge just yet, and Pep Guardiola certainly won’t be leaving the safety of the Bundesliga before the current campaign finishes at the very least.

Chelsea must therefore stick with Jose Mourinho for now, but for how long such a determined attitude can be maintained remains anyone’s guess down at Stamford Bridge this season…
