Whilst the immediate feeling of sensation surrounding West Brom’s Saido Berahino and his previous claims that he would never play for his current employers again have in-fact died down somewhat of late, there nonetheless remains a cloud of uncertainty over the striker and whatever remains of his future at the Hawthorns.
Current Baggies boss, Tony Pulis, may have casually brushed off his front-man’s behaviour as merely an act of a ‘naughty child’, but within a league dominated by passionate fans with a deep sense of loyalty to their respective clubs, Berahino will arguably never be fully forgiven among some sections of the West Brom supporters.
Although it would be wrong to paint the situation out in a far more dramatic and sensationalised light that what is apparently necessary, it seemingly remains interesting to dissect the scenario and predict where each party moves on from here.
So then, will Saido Berahino solidly remain a West Brom player throughout the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign, or are the England U21 international’s days at the Hawthorns now heavily numbered in light of his recent comments?
Let’s get a few things straight firstly – Berahino may well bare no ill feeling towards his current employers as a club in general, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the 22-year-old wouldn’t rather be playing for Tottenham Hotspur at this moment in time. The Burundi-born striker launched his attack against Baggies chairman, Jeremy Peace, after subsequently seeing his reported desire to move to White Hart Lane rejected several times.
Regardless of the significant – yet admittedly somewhat mysterious – circumstances going on behind the scenes here, such a scenario simply failed to shine Saido Berahino in much of a positive light. He was temporarily made out to be a somewhat controversial figure for a while, not just among the Hawthorns faithful as a group, but across the entire Premier League spectrum as a whole. No one can therefore suggest that his actions weren’t questionable at the very least.
Yet whether or not the England U21 international actually deserved such an intense backlash certainly remains debateable however, for without an increased knowledge of everything that was or wasn’t promised between the two parties behind closed doors, a definitive grip on the situation can never be achieved. But as modern day Premier League football is largely built upon heresy and pure speculation at best when it comes to matters of the transfer variety, such a notion hardly even matters in the cold light of day.
West Brom fans ultimately have reason to feel aggrieved if they’re being forced to support a player who clearly wishes to be operating elsewhere at the minute. They can also point the finger at Saido Berahino himself in some senses, for the 22-year-old’s recent statements have hardly been issued with genuine respect for their club at heart. Either way though, the situation hasn’t changed and the Hawthorns faithful are now eventually left with no other choice but to move on with supporting their club.
As long as the tricky front-man continues scoring whilst representing the Baggies – as he certainly has done since his brief foray against Jeremy Peace – West Brom supporters will at least have something to smile about in light of what has happened. Even if Berahino does in-fact move elsewhere at the first time of asking this January, he is ultimately not bigger than the club itself. His comments may well have been taken too seriously by now, and it certainly wouldn’t be a complete shock to witness some West Brom fans even bid farewell to their no. 18 in amicable style should the time arrive.
In the end, Tony Pulis simply has more important things to deal with at this stage in the season. His side may be relatively solid at the back – but they have truly been a drag to watch so far this term. The current Baggies boss therefore has a significant task on his hands in improving West Brom’s fortunes out on the pitch collectively, rather than dealing with matters on an individual level.
