Before his untimely departure from the Anfield dug-out this month, Brendan Rodgers was arguably the luckiest manager still operating among the English top-flight. One way or another, the determined Northern Irish tactician just never seemed wholly suited to the club in the first place.
Question marks were raised when the former Swansea City boss was first handed the role at Liverpool back in 2012 – and during his well-documented time on Merseyside – Brendan Rodgers was seemingly always a man working under pressure.
So then, now that the Reds have finally seen fit to part ways with their former boss and draft in the ever enigmatic and captivating figure of Jurgen Klopp, just what does the future hold for the long-standing Premier League club?
Will Liverpool continue to struggle during this undoubtedly transitional phase of the club’s history, or have the good times finally come back around for the Anfield faithful? We shall have to wait and see…
Before this discussion can truly begin however, a few important points need to be made clear. Although the current sense of excitement and sensation surrounding Jurgen Klopp does in-fact seem genuine from the Liverpool fans in particular, solving the deep-rooted problems at their club will be a difficult task to achieved overnight.
Ever since current Real Madrid boss, Rafa Bentiez, was somewhat surprisingly relieved from his duties at Anfield a good few seasons ago, the Red’s hierarchy have certainly made some pretty questionable decisions in the managerial department. Each of Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers failed to establish a strong enough squad at Anfield – and it is for that reason alone that Liverpool no longer achieve the same level of success that once came so easily to the club.
Rodgers’ recent signings in particular have distinctly fallen short of producing the kind performances the Anfield faithful have grown to expect throughout the years. The likes of Adam Lallana (£25 million), Dejan Lovren (£20 million), Mario Balotelli (£16 million) and Joe Allen (£15 million) in no way represent the kind of value Liverpool should be aiming for via each of their respective price-tags – so how they all ended up with the Reds on the back of their inflated statuses remains anyone’s guess at the minute.
No matter which way you look at it, Brendan Rodgers’ distinct lack of prowess in the transfer market has hampered Klopp’s chances of becoming an immediate success at Anfield. The ex-Bundesliga favourite certainly has a massive job on his hands in returning Liverpool to the big time, with the 48-year-old himself labelling his upcoming experience as ‘the biggest challenge’ in world football.
However, as Jurgen Klopp is a man who seemingly thrives at clubs with a strong history of success, a determined fan-base with a loyalty that can never be questioned, and a philosophy of playing football the right way – it seems obvious that Liverpool have sourced themselves the right man for the job. The former BVB hero will likely develop his current squad with more vigour and conviction than Brendan Rodgers was ever likely to achieve, possibly getting more out of the players than most would have initially expected possible.
The charismatic German will also be able to attract a higher calibre of player than what the Anfield faithful have recently been accustomed to, thanks to his show-stopping reputation among the European scene and Champions League in particular. Liverpool therefore have a manager who represents one of the best talents currently on the managerial circuit.
Yes, the journey will not be entirely smooth sailing for Jurgen Klopp in the cold light of day. The Premier League has proven a tough nut to crack time and time again for even the most experienced coaches out there – and when you consider the recent injury plight to hit the Liverpool ranks so far this season – the team’s immediate future doesn’t look too promising to say the very least.
Yet with Klopp now established as the main man running the show behind the scenes at Anfield, with a distinctly positive nature that can only serve to lift the club from their current predicament, Liverpool fans must ultimately rejoice at the fact that their club has made the right appointment.
The remainder of the 2015/16 campaign therefore takes on a greater sense of optimism for Reds fans now that Jurgen Klopp has finally arrived on Merseyside. Achieving a top-four finish this term consequently remains a viable task for Liverpool to aim for this season.
