With Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason, Eric Dyer and, of course, Harry Kane being promoted to the first team, Spurs look like a team full of heart and passion for the cause, but slightly lacking in the cutting edge quality of a Bale or a Modric that is required to challenge the big boys for silverware.

 

In contrast, Rafa Benitez has a plethora of world-class talent at his disposal, very few of whom progressed directly through the club’s academy. Gone are the days of Raul and Casillas. The fans at the Bernabeu no longer sing the praises of home-grown-heroes, but instead idolise their expensively assembled multi-national galacticos.

 

Real Madrid have not been defeated so far in pre-season. They have two draws and two wins under their belt, with both draws ending in penalty shootout victories for Benitez’s men. When you look at the opposition they have faced; Roma, Man City, AC Milan and Inter Milan, their undefeated record looks a particularly strong one.

 

Spurs on the other hand have played just one pre-season friendly since the players returned from their summer breaks; a 2-1 defeat to an MLS All-Star team. In my opinion Spurs have left their pre-season preparations far too late and I think that they will suffer with rustiness come the start of the Premier League season. With Spurs facing a highly strengthened Manchester United side in their opening League fixture, they must improve, and improve quickly.

 

In short, I simply can't see Spurs being able to match Real for neither quality nor fitness when considering my Tottenham v Real Madrid predictions. Despite the absences of Benzema and Ronaldo, I expect the La Liga runners up to comfortably see off the challenge of a below par Tottenham side.
