You know the start of the season is close when the Emirates Cup is underway, and with four evenly matched teams, on paper at least, this year's competition should be a cracker. Sunday's 2pm match sees Lyon take on Villarreal and here are our predictions and betting tips.
Today's Football Predictions – Lyon v Villarreal.
Villarreal head into their clash with the Ligue 1 runners up off the back of a terrific 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg in their opening match. The Spanish side finished a respectable sixth place in La Liga last season which was enough to secure a spot in the Europa League.
Opponents Lyon will be plying their trade in the Champions League this year after finishing their domestic season in second place behind PSG. The French side have not warmed up particularly well for the Emirates Cup, though, after being unceremoniously thumped by the hosts Arsenal on Saturday.
Odds for the clash have changed since the first round of Emirates Cup results, Lyon are now the outsiders at 11/5 with Villarreal the best odds 5/4 to win. The draw is on offer at 5/2 and may well prove to be the most sensible option for my first Lyon v Villarreal prediction due to the two evenly matched sides, back this outright with Bet365 along with the 2-2 correct score at 11/1 with Bet365. Goals have been a plenty so far in the competition, so it's definitely worth a shout.
My second football prediction for today is Lyon and Villarreal to draw, the best odds are 14/1 with William Hill. It’s as short as 10/1 at other bookies.
Moving over to the goalscoring market and there are some well-priced players that are catching the eye, and perhaps none more so than Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir. The 22 year old who is frequently touted as the next 'big player' to come out of France – scored 13 goals for Lyon last season and even earned a call up for the French national team. With top scorer Alexandre Lacazette playing most of the match against Arsenal, Fekir could be playing further forward against Villarreal.
